Julia Blackbird’s
Just got back from Julia’s with the family. My dad and I have been meaning to go there now for two years. One Christmas in Barnes and Noble we saw a Rachel Ray review that said Juila Blackbird’s (3434 W 32nd Ave) was amazing. Like my sister in law said “I wanna know what she had.” It wasn’t that great. My mom and SIL wanted to put a note in that for 10$ chips and dip, the chips were stale and the dip just ok. I personally liked the chips and dip. It seems though that to make anything taste good you have to have the green chile. I ordered rellonos that just lacked a little flavor. I didn’t get the green chile because it had pork in it and well, I just don’t / won’t eat pork. But I have a feeling that’s what it needed. My SIL’s tamale was disappointing. It was completely dry and crumbly. My dad had the three enchiladas one of each flavor and sauce and his was by far the best it seemed. Kayla had an acorn but she can tell you how she felt about that. We also ordered desert which I thought was just ok. The atmosphere is a little bright and the chairs a little stiff. It’s cute but not homey. I give it a C-. Peace
I’m from New Mexico. So a place touted as New Mexican fare better be delicious. I don’t want them putting my state (and kind of food) to shame. Julia’s is like if you went to your friend’s mom’s house in the 505 who wasn’t originally from there, and she made you some NM food, but she was just okay at it, but had a couple plates she was getting good but not great at making. Like HB said, I had the acorn squash – and it was a good fall meal with spices and pinto beans. I was most disappointed in the posole – it was the first time the group had eaten posole so I wanted them to be impressed, but Julia’s was mild (probably tamed to the Colorado pallate), but just boring as well. Julia’s did have pretty good green chile, though – hot like it should be. I thought the place was cute inside and true to NM decor – I give it a 3 star rating (out of 5). – RealIdeal(K)
