I went to this event a couple years back and I’d say it was a fun time: Westword’s Artopia. This year’s is on February 20th from 7 to 10:30 pm @ Vinyl + area venues. Each area is transformed into a theme – art, music/dancing, fashion. Drinks are included in your ticket. $25.

Westword Artopia incorporates food, drinks, art, music, theater, and fashion into one evening, with a portion of the proceeds benefitting a local charity. Westword will award 5 upcoming individuals or small organizations that have made an impact in the local art community. The winners will be featured in a special pullout section of Westword on February 18, 2010 and will be honored at the event. Each award recipient will receive a check for $3,000.

Artists are busy putting the final touches on Embrace!, the Denver Art Museum’s newest exhibition of site-specific installations. It opens this Saturday, Nov. 14, and is full of 17 intriguing, fun creations. If you’ve been to the museum recently, you’ve probably witnessed artists taking over the Hamilton Building with everything from paint guns to cherry pickers. Most of the installations are completely finished, but several are still in progress. Projects range from an airbrush painting that spans the four-story atrium to a maze of more than 8,700 brightly colored bungee cords. One that I was especially intrigued by was a multimedia presentation that incorporates motion sensors to change the display in relation to the number of visitors and their movements.

Seeing how the architecture of the museum shaped the artists’ works is fascinating. A special feature on the second floor will allow visitors to track the progress of the installations during their creation through time-lapse photography.

Embrace! will run through April 4, after which many of the creations will be painted over or otherwise dismantled. For more information, visit www.denverartmuseum.org.

It kicks off with a First Friday and goes on with the fun from there.

Artsy neighborhoods participating include Santa Fe Arts District, Cherry Creek North, Golden Triangle, Downtown, RiNo, Berkeley (Tennyson St.) and Belmar.

Night at the Museums is from 5 to 10 pm and all the museums in town will be open for free, and you can take a free shuttle to the museums starting at Cherry Creek Mall. The night of free museums includes the DAM, DMNS, the MCA, and the kid’s museum. Check out the shuttle schedules on the site as they don’t hit up each museum per shuttle.

Straight from the site:

Denver Arts Week is a weeklong celebration, highlighting the city’s visual and performing arts, taking place at seven neighborhood art districts, dozens of theaters and museums, and more than 100 art galleries. The event is organized by VISIT DENVER to help draw local and national attention to the cultural renaissance that Denver is experiencing – a renaissance that led Sunset Magazine to proclaim: “The Mile High City is remaking itself as a world capital of art and architecture.”

Enjoy!
