Basement, the new club below Martini Ranch, is now open. We haven’t been yet because we’re avoiding the long lines and general new club craziness. However, we’ll post an update when we do go! If you check it out, tell all what you think! Just wanted to share the word that the new hip thing is for all bars to have a bar within a bar. Funny stuff.

We did, however, stop by Wicked Garden (1403 Larimer St., owned by same owners as Jet), which used to be Open Bar which used to be Hush. And we’re here to tell you, it’s not new and improved. In fact, everything is exactly the same, except with more 80′s glam rock. Same layout, same decor, same $$$ drinks, even mostly same staff. So if you liked Hush or Open Bar, you’ll like Wicked Garden sans hip-hop and with more rock. We personally still aren’t fans – it tends to be a somewhat pretentious crowd in an overpriced bar that is trying to be rock and roll but feels like a club. Just doesn’t jive together.

Brought to you by Lotus Night Clubs (who also own 5 degrees and Monark (as well as 24K above Monark). Based on the ads so far, I’m personally not excited and actually loathe its opening. Seems pretty snotty but if you want to sell your first born to get in, you’ll make it to the front of the new trendy bar line in no time.

Regardless, I know I will have to go there with a couple friends who love their club openings – so we’ll do a review whenever we head there. If you check it out in the mean time, let us know how it goes. Opening is Friday.

This past Friday we stopped by some of our favorite Colfax spots including the Atomic Cowboy (3237 E Colfax). Here’s why I like this bar: board games. Oh yes, I spent a good hour of my Friday evening playing Sorry! at the bar. I totally whooped the other players, too. Unfortunately, Connect Four was missing most of it’s pieces so we had to take our second choice, and Sorry was it.

Other than the board games, thoughts on the bar are:

The Good: kitchen is open late, board games (make it a drinking game if you like), affordable drinks, good service, good BBQ, decent bar food. decent decor/atmosphere.

The Bad: crowd is hit or miss (can be annoying at times), missing game pieces, service is best at the bar – not a come to your seat often type of place.

Now, my perception of Moontime may be a bit tainted as I’ve only been here once and it could change nightly. You can read a different review below as well or here and here. But here’s my take:

Moontime Bar & Grille (846 Broadway) is an excellent spot for happy hippies and the like. Luckily, I’m one fifth hippy so I liked the Moontime. It’s also a Panic/Red Wings bar so be prepared for that. From the outside at night the place looks a bit sketch, but walk in and it’s an open, clean place that supports bands and booze. It has three levels: the roof to smoke, the second floor to people watch or play pool, and the first floor to sit in the corner and play one of their board games, drink and hippy dance to live music.

Hollyberry: I think this is a pretty cool place provided there’s live music. It’s a fun hang out and the upstairs lounge is chill. People aren’t particularly social here outside of their own circles but it’s a good place to take your own group of friends. Drinks are pretty affordable. The place was oddly bright – the place overall made me feel like I was at a put together house party, but a clean one and the owner of the house is having a band play. So yeah, check it out.

I love the Meadowlark in the Ballpark/RINO/Curtis Park neighborhood. I am biased because it is just blocks from my house, but take that away, and it’s still a great little hole in the wall… err… ground.

Located at 27th and Larimer, look for the plaque in the brick wall and the stairs heading down – you’ve found it. Open everyday from 4 pm to 2 am – even if you are the only ones in the joint they’ll keep it going for you. Last night we headed over for a few drinks out of boredom and – as always – it was great. When you first enter the bar you find what you most likely didn’t expect. Rather than a dingy dark hole, it’s actually has a great ambience with laquered wood bars, and an industrial feel. Stumble in on most weekday nights and you’ll also find live music or DJ’s on stage. In need of a quieter evening? Head out the back stairs and sit on the patio with a bucket of beer.

Other favorite features: bar tenders that don’t really know what they’re doing, so you get way too much booze in your drink (for a great price) after instructing them on how to make the perfect margarita just how you like it.

Other reviews to check out are here and here.
